  1. Menopause is a stage in life when a woman stops having her monthly period. It is a normal part of aging, marking the end of a woman’s reproductive years.Get enough calcium. A woman going through menopause needs 1000 mg to 1500 mg of calcium a day. Avoid excessive amounts of salt to reduce bloating associated with hormonal changes. 2. Going through menopause does not mean hormonal therapy. Millions of women go through menopause naturally without any major problems. If you do have symptoms, such as hot flashes, then treat the symptoms.
Symptoms of menopause may be alleviated with a diet low in fat and high in soy. Soy products contain phytoestrogens, which are plant compounds that have estrogenlike biological activity. A high-soy diet is about 40% to 50% as effective as hormone replacement therapy in treating symptoms in many cases.
Phytoestrogens are found in soy products (e.g., tofu, tempeh, miso, soybean milk, and meat substitutes and soy powders for adding to foods or to smoothies), in linseed (flaxseed) products, and to a lesser extent, in fruits, vegetables, cereals, and seeds. Concentrated plant estrogens in tablet form have not been shown to be effective.
Studies show that the optimal amount of soy is about 40 grams per day to alleviate symptoms of hot flashes.
