The earliest I would say would probably be around 45, but that’s a fairly extreme case. Of course every woman is different, so it is very possible to go through it earlier.
Other signs of menopause include hot flashes, cold flashes, night sweats, changes in appetite, changes in weight, fatigue, hair loss or hair gain, and gradually weakening joints. Now, a woman could have all of these symptoms, some of them, or none of them.
Ruling that out, periods can be temporarily paused (for up to three months) by stress, either emotional or physical. Prolonged loss of a cycle can be a sign of ovarian cysts, or (in some cases) cervical cancer.
My suggestion? If you’re period is more than a couple months late, and you’ve ruled out pregnancy, it’s time to schedule an appointment with your doctor. If you’re middle aged (35-55), ask them about the possibility of an early menopause. Also ask for a pap smear and visual check-up to make sure nothing is wrong up there.
    Good luck!

One of my patients (Im am Ob-Gyn) was 19 when she went through menopause. And I read a case study of a 15 year old going through it.
However, just because a woman stops having a period, doesnt mean she is going through menopause. Menopause is the total cessation of periods, but that only occurs when all her egg follicles are ‘gone’ or used up.
So when a woman comes into my office and complains of amennorhea (absence of periods), my first suspicion isnt menopause. I first look for a history or pattern. The cause could be anything from low body weight, excessive exercise, dietary habits, living a high stress lifestyle, benign ovarian cysts (Polycystic Ovarian Disease), problems within the Pituitary gland, problems with the Thyroid gland, endometriosis…..the list goes on and on.
Menopause is really easy to test, however. If her lab results come back with close to no Progesterone and Estradiol, she IS in menopause. However, that doesnt explain WHY, and then the doctor must explore from that point on.

I have heard of women as young as 19 and 20 starting menopause. However it is very rare and I would seek more answers before letting it go. If you are in menopause then the doctors should be able to figure that out.
