Is It Possible That Men Can Suffer From The Male Menopause?

My nephew confided in my husband he was suffering from severe irritability, mood swings, and a poor sex drive.
His girlfriend said he also has aches and pains, and is always tired, and always sweating.
Could this indeed be a from of the male menopause, his mother says he is a hypochondriac.
10 points for your views, and what can we do to help him, it also seems he is always so nasty to people, is it possible to blame the menopause.

Andropause or male menopause is a name that has been given to a supposed menopause-like condition in middle-aged men. This may relate to a reduction of the production of the hormones testosterone and dehydroepiandrosterone in middle-aged men, and the consequences of that reduction, which is associated with a decrease in Leydig cells
Unlike women, middle-aged men do not experience a complete and permanent physiological shutting down of the reproductive system. A steady decline in testosterone levels with age (in both men and women) is well documented. There is on-going professional disagreement about whether or not “andropause” should be considered a normal “state” (the term used by MeSH), or a disorder.
For you Morgan:Dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) is a multi-functional steroid that has been implicated in a broad range of biological effects in humans.

You don’t say how old he is. Men do have a drop in male hormones usu around mid fifties. Perhaps he could have an underlying medical condition. Has he had a complete physical exam as of late? You should suggest this as a first step in getting help. He might be afraid. Lots of men are afraid of anything medical. Checkups included. Your husband should be the one to speak w/him about this, since he did confide this problem to him. Suggest to your husband he do this in a friendly, non-confrontational manner and hopefully your nephew will see that his family is truly concerned about him and want him to be well.

  4. Yes, most definitely men can have menopause symptoms. He should speak with his general practitioner. Hormone levels change in men too. There are lab tests that can be done in order to find out if this is indeed going on. He may also have problems with his blood sugar. That can cause a person to behave erratically, break out in a sweat and be very irritable and tired. It is best he see his GP for a proper diagnosis.

As men age their testosterone drops. Your nephew could most certainly be suffering from this. The good news is, testosterone replacement therapy is usually very effective.
And by the way, even if he is a hypochondriac it doesn’t mean he’s not suffering. After all, she’s not the one who is having to deal with his low sex drive. Hopefully.

Not only possible, it is absolutely true…it is called ‘Metapause.” And there are treatments for it. Testosterone shots to maintain testosterone levels that are expected in a man of his age (some men produce no testosterone to speak of after a certain age, and it reflects in a serious loss of energy, bone density, strength, sex drive, ability to function sexually, etc.
Here is a case of a man needing to go to doctor to have a battery of tests done. There are many clinics that deal only with Male Metapause and can cure the problems with Testosterone and Vitamin B’s in the right balances. This is not an area for an amature! Too much testosterone and the reverse effects will be seen!

  7. Bob says:

Yes, there is a midlife drop in testosterone which can cause symptoms. Fortunately, it’s treatable. Yes, it can make him irritable. Testosterone causes a feeling of well-being, and a lack of it goes the other way. It could also be something else like diabetes, so he should get a thorough checkup from his doctor.
Morgan, it’s called DHEA and you can find it in with the vitamins and other supplements in the pharmacy. It’s not too expensive.

well yes i believe men do suffer and also nowadays there are problems i believe with erectile dysfunction, it must be very depressing for them, historically men are not supposed to have that sort of problem, but obviously do, it must be very difficult to come to terms with given the sort of male testosterone thing they have going

  9. gimpalom says:

    Oh yeah:
It used to be called “Middle Age Crazy”. Songs have been sung and movies made about it.
There is a new (sort of) name for it. I think it is “Metepause” or something like that.
Hormone therapy can help as well as treating symptoms. It just requires getting the younger chemical balance back in order to feel like you did when you were younger.
